Owing James $1800 plus interest, George J. signed an indenture on May 16, 1831 transferring nine slaves and most of his personal property to George W., with the provision that George would retain possession until James required payment, at which point George W. would sell enough of the slaves and personal property to pay the debt and expenses, then return whatever remained to George.9
