     Eve, Elisha, Jacob, Christina, Anna, Mary, Samuel and Lewis was listed as a household member living with Henry J. DeWitt in the 1860 Census in Richardson Co, NE; Henry was a farmer, with $450 in personal property.6
     Samuel was listed as a lodger living with Jacob Balsor Shellhorn's household on the 1880 Census in Speiser Precinct, Richardson Co, NE.8
     Samuel Jackson DeWitt married Ida May Shellhorn, daughter of Jacob Balsor Shellhorn and Mary Moore, on Oct 20, 1881.10,3,11,5,7,12
     Samuel got a Receiver's Receipt on Nov 5, 1887 in Lawn Ridge Township, Cheyenne Co, KS, but there is no record of his having finished the process of getting a land patent.13
     Samuel Jackson DeWitt was listed on the tax roll in Lawn Ridge Township, Cheyenne Co, KS, in 1891.13
     Samuel and Ida moved in 1891 to NE; there was a terrible drought in Cheyenne County during the early 1890's, and this probably forced the family to move back to Nebraska.14
     Samuel was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census in West Branch, Pawnee Co, NE. The family was renting a farm. Ira and Bertha were in school. S Cruse was boarding with the family..9
     He resided in Chapman, Dickinson Co, KS, in Dec, 1916.15,16
     Samuel was listed as the head of a family on the 1920 Census in Chapman, Dickinson Co, KS. Samuel was a clerk in a grocery store. The family was renting. Mary and Florence were both teaching in public schools..5
     Samuel Jackson DeWitt was farmer a about 1920 in Saline Co, KS.3

     Samuel was listed as the head of a family on the 1930 Census in 225 South Fourth, Salina, Saline Co, KS. Samuel owned his house, which was worth $2,000. Merle was a nurse, employed, but the industry column is illegible.7

     In 1939, Samuel had a stroke. Myra moved in with her grandparents for a year to take care of him.17
