James Hays

b. circa 1799, d. Sep, 1879
James was born in PA circa 1799.1,2
     He married Mary Kuhn.3
James was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census in Pymatuning Township, Mercer Co, PA. James was a farmer with $800 in real estate. William, John and Israel were also farmers; Mitchel was a blacksmith. It appears that Mary Ann Hays was married within the year (which I think makes her William's wife rather than James and Mary's daughter). Israel, Maria, Alexander, Martha, and James had all attended school within the year. There was a D.J. Brakeman also living in the household; he was listed as a farmer and attended school within the year. Farm help, or a relative of Mary's?.1
James Hays moved circa 1857 to Andrew, Jackson Co, IA.4
James was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census in Perry, Jackson Co, IA. James and William were farmers. James' real property was valued at $200. William could not read or write..5
James was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census in Andrew, Jackson Co, IA. James was a retired famer, Mahalia was keeping house, and William was a day laborer. James' real property was valued at $400, his personal property at $200. Both James and Mahalia had parents of foreign birth. Mahalia couldn't write; William couldn't read or write. William was "idiotic" and did not have the right to vote..6
James Hays died in Sep, 1879 in Andrew, Jackson Co, IA.4
