James was ill in New Madrid, MO, on Apr 29, 1862. He says he got sick in December 1861, and was pressed to fight anyway. Asst Adjutant General says muster rolls say he was "present for duty" in March and April 1862, then "absent on sick furlough since April 29, 1862" May and June, and "absent without leave" July and August. His discharge certificate says he was discharged July 8, so he must have been discharged from the hospital and his unit didn't get word for a couple of months..5
He was released from active duty in Madison, WI, on Jul 8, 1862.5

James Orice Phetteplace received a receiver's receipt for payment of the entry fee for his Homestead application on Mar 5, 1879. The fee was $3.99. The land was described as 159 74/100 acres in the W 1/2 of the NE 1/4 and the E 1/2 of the NW 1//4 of Section 1, Township 4, Range 14.19

His file includes several further applications and affidavits, including one that says "I am unable to furnish evidence required by Circular No 58 hereto attached other than already sent..." (Affidavit May 7, 1878). By 1898 there appears a form that was sent with his check, so he must have been receiving them. The examiner's report which finally approved him (unfortunately undated, but last data item is 1881) says that he had a disease of the lungs which rendered him 1/2 disabled from 1862 to 1873, 3/4 disabled until 1879, and totally disabled after that..5

A census listed James as head of household in Harvey Township, Smith Co, KS, in Apr, 1895. James had been honorably discharged from Wisconsin 6th Artillery. He was a farmer. He had 160 acres, 100 in cultivation, all of them fenced with wire. The farm was worth about $2,000, and the farm equipment about $35. In fall 1894, he planted 40 acres of winter wheat. In spring 1895, he planted 55 acres of corn, 7 acres of oats, and 1 acres of Irish potatoes. They made about 200 pounds of butter. They had 5 horses, 1 mule/ass, and 2 milch cows. They had 5 apple trees bearing fruit. Leonard (enumerated next door) was identified as a farmer but not listed in the agriculture census so he was probably helping farm James' land..22
