Shot Merchant But Tripped In Escape
Farmer-Robber Knocked Unconsious in Jump From 14-Foot Porch of Store
Chandler, Okla., Oct. 7 -- A tall young farmer who shot a hardware merchant in a futile robbery attempt sat dejectedly in the county jail today because he failed to take the stairs on the way out.
The farmer, D. P. Hickman, 23, was knocked unconscious when he leaped off a 14-foot porch at the rear of the store after shooting Frank Hood, 60-year-old proprietor.
Undersheriff Hubert Wagner arrested Hickman and he was jailed without charge pending the outcome of Hood's injuries. Hood was struck in the chest by one bullet and another grazed his head.
Wagner said the youth entered Hood's store and asked to see some pistols.
"He picked one out, then bought some shells and loaded it," Wagner said. "Then he attempted to rob Hood and when Hood resisted, he shot him."
O. T. Hargiss, a painter working in the store, grabbed the pistol from Hickman but the youth wrested free and ran out the back door, lurching off the high porch.
