Obituary
Private funeral services were held for James P. Hays at the Londeen Funeral Home on Friday, October 19, 1945 at 2 o'clock. Rev. C.D. Gambriell was in charge of the services. The music was rendered by Mrs. Myrtle Blackwelder, Mrs. B.C. Sander, Mrs. Wm. Foerschler, and Miss Mildred Ramsey. The following grandsons of the deceased were body bearers, Mervin Hays, James Frazier, Vernon Hays, Jos. Frazer, C. James Hays, and Delbert Hays.
James Peleg Hays, the eldest son of Mitchel and Harriet Bowen Hays was born near Maquoketa, Iowa April 13, 1858 and departed this life in St. John's Hospital at Salina, Kansas on October 15, 1945.
In the spring of 1872 he came to Kansas with his parents and settled on a farm, south of Smith Center, Kansas.
On February 28, 1881 he was united in marriage to Loretta Phetteplace and they established a home on a farm in Smith County. Three children were born to them, Jessie May and Emerson now deceased, and Orice Lee. Death dissolved this union.
On Nov. 24, 1895 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Drewzella Longcor McNall, who has been his companion for nearly fifty years. To this union two daughters were born, Mrs. Harriet Frazier and Mrs. Luella Hoskins.
After living in Smith Co. for twenty-seven years he moved to Denton, Kansas where he worked as a grain dealer.
In 1911 the family came to Chapman and he had charge of a grocery store for a few years.
Surviving are his wife, a son Orice Lee Hays, of Salina; tow daughters, Mrs. Perry Frazier, of Chapman, and Mrs. Frank Hoskins of Lacelde, Mo., a step-daughter, Mrs. Mae Frank of Santa Monica, Calif.
Two sisters, Mrs. C.C. Burr Sr., and Mrs. F. M. McElfresh and a brother, Elmer Hays all Smith Center. Besides these relatives he leaves twenty-six grandchildren and thirty-one great grandchildren and number of nieces and nephews.
