     She contracted polio in 1925 (abt) and was paralized for a year before regaining the ability to walk. She said that she and another boy in Salina contracted polio about the same time. His family could afford to put him in an iron lung and her's couldn't; this made her really mad. She later said that she believed that her determination to walk again stemmed from her anger. Sadly, the boy in the iron lung was permanently paralyzed.12
