     Leonard "Len" Orris Phetteplace and Jessie Cynthia Phetteplace appeared on the census of Apr 25, 1910 in Harvey Township, Smith Co, KS; Lenny was a farmer working a rented farm, and Justin was a farm-hand. Justin, Eliza, Earl and Loretta had attended school in the past year. Jessie had had six children, four of whom were still living.15
     Len bought a farm, intending to start a fruit ranch in southwest Missouri circa Jan, 1912.19
     A census listed Leonard as head of household in Harvey Township, Smith Co, KS, in 1915.20
     Leonard was listed as the head of a family on the 1920 Census in Harvey Township, Smith Co, KS. James was living with the family; he owned a farm. Lenard was renting. Earl was working as a farm laborer on a "home farm," presumably James.'.5
     Leonard "Len" Orris Phetteplace lived in Feb, 1922 in Smith Center, Smith Co, KS.4 He died on Apr 10, 1929 in Phetteplace homestead, Smith Center, Smith Co, KS, at age 59; he had suffered from heart trouble for several years.10,9 Leonard's funeral was held on Apr 12, 1929 at Corvallis church in Smith Co, KS.9 He was buried on Apr 12, 1929 in Cedar Cemetery, Smith Co, KS.9 An obituary was published on Apr 18, 1929 in the Smith County Pioneer in Smith Center, Smith Co, KS.9
