JOHN MCCLINTON - The McClinton family came from Abbeville Districts, SC and settled in Randolph County near Sparta, IL. John McClinton 1740-1785/90 had a son John McClinton 1766-1806 married Elizabeth Betsy Anderson. Four children were born to John and Elizabeth: Susannah McClinton 1793-1829 married Robert Foster; Nancy McClinton married Robert McDonald; John McClinton and Samuel McClinton 1800-1856 married Nancy Agnes Miller, 1805-1881 had a son John M. CmClinton, 1822-1910, married Mary (Polly) R. Kennedy, 1823-1897, and they had five children. Taken from the NewsPlaindealer, Sparta. "Deaths Doings Mr. John McClinton one of Sparta's oldest and highly respected citizens departed this life at his home four miles east of town. He was also known as 'Uncle John'. He is survived by five children, Millie, James, Will, Joseph, and John F. with whom he made his home until his death." Millie Verganetta, 1864-1939 married James Wilson Hood, 1864-1903, and they had five children: Bertha, Nellie, Clifford, Mabel and Charles. James Renwick McClinton, 1850-1925 married Mary Bell Kitchen and they had five children. William Pressley McClinton, 1857-1931. Joseph Cletus McClinton, 1857-1933 married Margaret J. Kerr, 1858-1888 haveing two children, Eva and Alva, later Joseph married Emma Laney and they had Emery Crawford Clinton. John Freemont McClinton, 1861-1945 married Charlotte Wisely, 1866-1919 and they had four children: Jennie Mar married Herbert Shelly; Alfred a carpenter; Leonard a painter and Mary Carol McClinton born Dec 25, 1900. Mary married Jake Herberger, 1898-1985 and they have three children: Doris 1928 married Richard M. Huey; Dorothy 1929 married Alfred D. Dobbs, and they had four children; and Marjorie A. Herberger 1933 who lives in Sparta. The McClinton farm east of Sparta is a Centennial farm -- meaning it has been in the McClinton family over 100 years and is still owned by descendants Doris Herberger Huey, granddaughter of John F. McClinton. There is a sign designating that it is a Centennial Farm. John M. McClinton was a charter member of the United Presbyterian Church in Sparta, which is now the Trinity U. P. Church, and descendants Doris Herberger Huey and Marjorie Herberger, still attend this church. The McClintons' are buried in Caledonia Cemetery at Sparta.
